Entry #196 from Emma Jones on October 4, 2023 at 8:22 am
My grandmother (Jane Davies), grandfather (David Davies) and aunts (Ann and Janet) were in lifeboat number 7. My grandparents were returning home to Wales from Shillong in India where they had worked as missionaries. My aunts were very young children at the time, both under 5 years of age, my mother had not yet been born. Thank you for keeping alive the memories of the incredible journey they endured and the bravery of the seamen who saved their lives. They will never be forgotten.Admin reply: Thank you Emma - your kind comments are very much appreciated.Hugh

I have read through your noble efforts to preserve the memories of those brave people. Well done -- my respects to you, Hugh. I have a lump in my throat and damp eyes.regardsHarry (ex r/o Brocklebanks.)

09 December 2017SaturdayMy wife and I are long-term missionaries here in Nepal. Some time ago, together, we read "Ida S. Scudder" by Pauline Jeffrey. Chapter 11 of that book refers to the Marjorie and Donald Miller, and the S.S. City of Cairo. This afternoon I had a bit of time, searched "on line," and found this most-interesting account: a true testimony of faith, determination, and answered prayer. Thank you for sharing it!Dale Lee NafzigerKathmandu, Nepal

Hugh,We have corresponded and as you know, my late sister was engaged to be married to John Tagg who died in lifeboat Number 1. I have sent you a photo of John with me and Dolly Cole (my niece) taken in Kingston, Ontario in about 1941.Your website is impressive and I have learned so much from it about John and his sad death.

Fascinating web site. Diana Jarman's story intrigues me. I sailed as a deck officer in the Canadian Merchant Navy in the 70's and 80's. I sailed with 3 men who had been torpedoed during the war. Two were adversely affected by their experiences.

My grand daughter is aged 10 and researching World War 11. I see my brother Tom McCall (now deceased) made a comment re my father's brother Capt Thomas Dunlop McCall. We are not able to find out much information about Capt Thomas McCall but I see there is an input from a Bill McCall who lives in Kirkintilock. Of course Capt Thomas McCall was also my uncle. Are you able to put us in touch with Bill McCall. To put it in context. My father was George McCall who married Isabella Henderson. I am the eldest of 7 children born in 1940.Be very pleased if you are able to help.Thank you for the website- it is very important for future generations.Kind regardsAgnes Hill (nee McCall)

Utterly amazing that anyone survived. All of those on the SS City of Cairo are very special people. My condolences to families, relatives, and those that knew them. They all gave so much of themselves. If we could only have more people just like them, that would be heaven on earth. God Bless
