What a coincidence, I was idly looking for my Dads old ships and found that my and your Dad served together albeit for only a few days. Mine was an apprentice on the Empire Summer from 1942 until the wars end and her going back to Turnbull Scotts.

My Father sailed on the Samota 31 may 1944 to 13th July 1944. His name was Harold McCormick. He was J.O.S at the time.

Wonderful website. My father Harry Snow was 3rd officer on the City of Winchester when she was sunk and Mr Faulds was chief engineer. I have the Captains report of the Winchester sinking details of which don't agree with my father's story. Anybody with details of the Winchester sinking please contact.Mike Snow

Greetings: As a co-worker, of Sheila Thomson, I had the privilege of hearing this fascinating story and yet tragic event. Sheila, allowed me access to a letter written by one of the survivors, as an account of the events, and ultimate rescue, as it related to Sheila's grandfather and his death at sea. A truly amazing story, of many years past, yet brought to "life" via this web-page. Thank-you for this.Blessings to all.....................jack

I have been going through my late mothers papers and came across a book by Donald Millar. In it he talks about my grandfathers death on a life boat after the torpedo attack on SS City of Cairo. I was aware he had died in an, attack at sea but like many other people it was never discussed. The web site is fascinating and fills in lots of blanks for me.
