Dear Hugh,Many thanks for your condolences about Francis and your very kind words. May I read your message out at his memorial service on Friday?Best wishesDavid
Website is even better than before, Hugh. But I sadly have to report the death of my brother Francis who was a survivor of the torpedoing. He died last week while on holiday in Mauritius. He had had a very full life, and died aged 77 while snorkelling. A good way to go, but he is sadly missed by his four children and eleven grandchildren, as well as by his sister Susan and myselfBest wishesDavid
As a good friend of Hugh I am pleased to say that the site, since my last comment, has gone from a very strong beginning to quite an incredible record of the ship and all of those involved. I particularly like the new photographs and would join with Hugh in thanking all of the contributors. Hugh has put a lot of work into this project and deserves to be commended, although he wouldn't seek this, for his efforts.
Excellent website Hugh. A fitting tribute to a very nice guy. I will always remember that Monday night all those years ago, over a dram, when Calum told me the whole story of the SS City of Cairo. He told me how he used to ration the water on the lifeboat by dipping a young girl's ribbon in the container and passing it around everyone in turn. He was like many other Hebrideans - they never spoke much about the war.
Hi Hugh, you recently contacted us re the use of a photo from our site, please go ahead, no acknowledgement required as I can't remember where I found it. We will place a link tonight to your site.BR Fred Waddington
A Brilliant tribute, the story of the sea should never be forgotten.
My Grandparents (J.E.Davies and Rev. D. Davies) and my Mother and her sister were on #7 lifeboat, and survived to tell the tale... I'd like to thank you for a great site.....
was an amusing web site , thanks for it
This is a very good tribute to everybody who was on that ill-fated ship. Very well researched and presented. I served almost 10 years in the Merchant Navy in the 1960/70's and I am glad that I never had to use the lifeboats in an emergency; taking to lifeboats in the middle of the ocean especially in those days must have been really terrifying.Hugh, thanks for a most interesting siteCheers FrankAdmin reply: Hello Frank,Thank you for your comments. They are very much appreciated.
Hugh just stumbled across this wonderful tribute. I served onboard the Oil Endeavour during the mine clearance operations in Suez as the POMA nice to hear that you remain well. Buck
